BTN: Tiwi music: Keeping an ancient culture alive

SUBJECTS:  Arts

YEARS:  3–4, 5–6

Discover how music and dance are helping to keep the traditions of the Tiwi people alive.

The customs and stories of the Tiwi people have been passed on to new generations through storytelling, song and dance. Many of the remaining languages of Australia's ancient Indigenous cultures are being lost. Today there is a race to record and preserve the Tiwi songs while elders can still share their knowledge.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Are there storytellers in your family who tell tales of the 'good old days'? Perhaps your parents or other family members tell you stories about their childhood when life was very different from your life today. How do you get information on your family history? How do old stories, photographs or videos of your family make you feel?
  2. 2.What is the purpose of the Tiwi people's songs? What words do the Tiwi elders use to describe how they felt when they discovered the recordings from the museum? Specifically, what was Eustace Tipiloura reminded of when he heard the songs? How many Indigenous languages were spoken in Australia before European settlement?
  3. 3.Why is it important for musician Genevieve Campbell to record, notate and translate the Tiwi music? Tiwi people use music to pass on their stories. Many cultures use music for different purposes, such as in ceremonies or celebrations. Can you think of other examples where music is used for special purposes by groups in your community — cultural groups, schools, religious groups or even sporting clubs?
  4. 4.If you had to record your own history through a song, what would you sing about? Which instruments would you choose to accompany the song, and why? What rhythm would you use? Fast, slow, or a mix of tempos? What feelings and ideas would you like to convey through your song? Compose your own song or choose one you like that tells a story about you.
