ABC News: The Freedom Ride: there's a lot of work to be done

SUBJECTS:  Civics and Citizenship, History

YEARS:  9–10

In February 2015 a busload of students and former activists left Sydney to retrace the journey of the original Freedom Riders.

The Freedom Riders visited northern New South Wales in 1965 to observe and confront discrimination suffered by Aboriginal people.

In this News clip, meet some of the original Riders, along with representatives of the communities they visited in 2015.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What do you know about the nature of discrimination experienced by Indigenous Australians? Has it changed for the better or worse in the centuries following European settlement? Do you think Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples enjoy the same opportunities as other Australians today? Are things better now than they were 50 years ago, when the original Freedom Riders took to the backroads of New South Wales?
  2. 2.What are Pat Healey's hopes for the commemorative Freedom Ride? What are some of the differences in travel conditions experienced by the original and contemporary Riders? What form of racism did Alice Silver experience when she attended high school?
  3. 3.Aboriginal Land Council member Des Jones says, 'We can't be complacent. We can't think that … it's a done deal now and everything's happy, we're all happy and we're moving along. There's a lot of work to be done.' In what areas do you think more needs to be done to eliminate racism and disadvantage? What strategies would you use to achieve this?
  4. 4.Matthew Dickerson, the Mayor of Dubbo, makes reference to the number of cultures represented in the local swimming pool. Mr Dickerson is making reference to the controversy surrounding the original Freedom Riders' visit to the Moree Baths and Swimming Pool. Use appropriate sources, including those found on ABC Splash, to find out more about this pivotal event in Australian history.
