Life in Medieval Europe: Trading for food

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  7–8

What are the essential things you need to survive?

Food, water, medicine, shelter, sanitation … anything else? How do you obtain these basic requirements? How might people living in Medieval Europe have survived if they had no money or land?

In this clip, discover a useful practice that helped peasants negotiate a living.

This clip is one in a series of five.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Money was hard to come by in Medieval societies. Only feudal lords and their bailiffs had access to large amounts of cash. How could a peasant, with little if any money, pay for basic goods and services?
  2. 2.Why were bakers able to do as they wished with the peasants' flour? How did they pay their rent? Why was the consumption of meat forbidden on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays?
  3. 3.What is the difference between bartering and paying money? Why do you think it was common in Medieval societies? In what way did bakers barter with their lords? Can you think of any modern-day examples of bartering?
  4. 4.In the clip we are told that potatoes, rice, tea and coffee had not yet arrived in Western Europe. Use appropriate sources to find out where each of these items originated and when they arrived in Europe.
