This clip is one in a series of five.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Whether or not you think women enjoy the same opportunities as men today, this certainly wasn't the case in Western Europe a thousand years ago. As you watch this clip, consider what underlying principles and beliefs determined the role of women in medieval societies.
  2. 2.For how long were girls considered to be the property of their fathers? Who became their 'owners' next? What tasks were commonly undertaken by women? What was a 'kirtle'? What might a peasant man be likely to wear in medieval times? Why were jackets the most important items of clothing?
  3. 3.Why do you think people brought their animals into their homes in the evening? What hazards might the animals present? What hints are offered in the clip to suggest that animals were valued very highly?
  4. 4.Life was typically harder for women than it was for men in Medieval Europe. Women not only waited on the men in their families, they often toiled at the same jobs for less pay. See if you can find out some basic rights that were withheld from women in Medieval Europe.
