This cross-curriculum resource is designed to introduce Stage 2, 3 and 4 students to the design thinking process through a series of videos and interactive activities. This resource can only be viewed in Chrome, MS Edge, Firefox and Safari. This resource is also downloadable as a SCORM file: the downloaded version will only work if you upload it to a webserver, such as Moodle or Canvas.

NSW syllabus outcomes

(EN2-1A) communicates in a range of informal and formal contexts by adopting a range of roles in group, classroom, school and community contexts

(EN2-7B) identifies and uses language forms and features in their own writing appropriate to a range of purposes, audiences and contexts

(EN2-10C) thinks imaginatively, creatively and interpretively about information, ideas and texts when responding to and composing texts

(EN2-11D) responds to and composes a range of texts that express viewpoints of the world similar to and different from their own

(EN2-12E) recognises and uses an increasing range of strategies to reflect on their own and others' learning

(ST2-2DP-T) selects and uses materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity

(EN3-1A) communicates effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes using increasingly challenging topics, ideas, issues and language forms and features

(EN3-7C) thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information and ideas and identifies connections between texts when responding to and composing texts

(EN3-8D) identifies and considers how different viewpoints of their world, including aspects of culture, are represented in texts

(EN3-9E) recognises, reflects on and assesses their strengths as a learner

(ST3-2DP-T) plans and uses materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity

(EN4-2A) effectively uses a widening range of processes, skills, strategies and knowledge for responding to and composing texts in different media and technologies

(EN4-5C) thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information, ideas and arguments to respond to and compose texts

(EN4-9E) uses, reflects on and assesses their individual and collaborative skills for learning

(TE4-1DP) designs, communicates and evaluates innovative ideas and creative solutions to authentic problems or opportunities

(TE4-2DP) plans and manages the production of designed solutions

Australian curriculum content descriptions

(ACELY1687) Interpret ideas and information in spoken texts and listen for key points in order to carry out tasks and use information to share and extend ideas and information

(ACELA1488) Understand that social interactions influence the way people engage with ideas and respond to others for example when exploring and clarifying the ideas of others, summarising their own views and reporting them to a larger group

(ACELA1476) Understand that successful cooperation with others depends on shared use of social conventions, including turn-taking patterns, and forms of address that vary according to the degree of formality in social situations

(ACELY1688) Use interaction skills such as acknowledging another’s point of view and linking students’ response to the topic, using familiar and new vocabulary and a range of vocal effects such as tone, pace, pitch and volume to speak clearly and coherently

(ACELY1792) Use interaction skills, including active listening behaviours and communicate in a clear, coherent manner using a variety of everyday and learned vocabulary and appropriate tone, pace, pitch and volume

(ACELT1596) Draw connections between personal experiences and the worlds of texts, and share responses with others

(ACELA1489) Understand differences between the language of opinion and feeling and the language of factual reporting or recording

(ACTDEP014) Critique needs or opportunities for designing and explore and test a variety of materials, components, tools and equipment and the techniques needed to produce designed solutions

(ACTDEP016) Select and use materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques and use safe work practices to make designed solutions

(ACTDEP017) Evaluate design ideas, processes and solutions based on criteria for success developed with guidance and including care for the environment

(ACTDEP018) Plan a sequence of production steps when making designed solutions individually and collaboratively

(ACTDIP010) Define simple problems, and describe and follow a sequence of steps and decisions (algorithms) needed to solve them

(ACTDIP012) Explain how student solutions and existing information systems meet common personal, school or community needs

(ACELY1700) Plan, rehearse and deliver presentations for defined audiences and purposes incorporating accurate and sequenced content and multimodal elements

(ACELY1710) Plan, rehearse and deliver presentations, selecting and sequencing appropriate content and multimodal elements for defined audiences and purposes, making appropriate choices for modality and emphasis

(ACELY1796) Use interaction skills, for example paraphrasing, questioning and interpreting non-verbal cues and choose vocabulary and vocal effects appropriate for different audiences and purposes

(ACELY1816) Use interaction skills, varying conventions of spoken interactions such as voice volume, tone, pitch and pace, according to group size, formality of interaction and needs and expertise of the audience

(ACELY1709) Participate in and contribute to discussions, clarifying and interrogating ideas, developing and supporting arguments, sharing and evaluating information, experiences and opinions

(ACELA1502) Understand how to move beyond making bare assertions and take account of differing perspectives and points of view

(ACELY1699) Clarify understanding of content as it unfolds in formal and informal situations, connecting ideas to students’ own experiences and present and justify a point of view

(ACTDEP024) Critique needs or opportunities for designing, and investigate materials, components, tools, equipment and processes to achieve intended designed solutions

(ACTDEP027) Negotiate criteria for success that include sustainability to evaluate design ideas, processes and solutions

(ACTDEP028) Develop project plans that include consideration of resources when making designed solutions individually and collaboratively

(ACTDIP019) Design, modify and follow simple algorithms involving sequences of steps, branching, and iteration (repetition)

(ACTDIP021) Explain how student solutions and existing information systems are sustainable and meet current and future local community needs

(ACELY1728) Use a range of software, including word processing programs, to confidently create, edit and publish written and multimodal texts

(ACTDEP037) Select and justify choices of materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques to effectively and safely make designed solutions

(ACTDEP038) Independently develop criteria for success to evaluate design ideas, processes and solutions and their sustainability

(ACTDEP039) Use project management processes when working individually and collaboratively to coordinate production of designed solutions

(ACTDIP027) Define and decompose real-world problems taking into account functional requirements and economic, environmental, social, technical and usability constraints

(ACTDIP031) Evaluate how student solutions and existing information systems meet needs, are innovative, and take account of future risks and sustainability
