Hi, I'm Tahlia. Thank you for joining me today to learn about alliteration. Today's learning intention is to learn, to hear alliteration and use it to make our writing more interesting for today's lesson. You need some pencils and some paper. So what is alliteration? Alliteration is when you can hear the same sound at the start of words, close together, like in a sentence. The first sound in my name is Tahlia. What's the first sound in your name? Can you think of an animal that starts with that same sound? I could be to Tahlia the tiger or I could be Tahlia the turtle. What about you?
Now we're going to read Morris the Mole by Nikki Greenberg. I want you to listen for the alliteration in this book. There's lots of it. You might even spot some that I miss. Up from the darkness out of his hole comes pioneer trailblazer Morris the mole. With a twirl of his spade and a twitch of his nose, Morris makes tunnels wherever he goes. I can see that the author used the 't' sound for alliteration on this page. Twirl, twitch, tunnels. Yes, I dig, dig, dig, dig. Every chance that I get. Oh, the places I've been, the creatures I've met. The caves I've created, the treasures I've found, exploring the glorious, great underground. So down and be digging into the dirt, beetles for breakfast and worms for dessert. Did you spot some alliteration too? I can see 'beetles for breakfast'.
I follow my fancy. I follow my snout. I burrow, I tunnel, and then I pop out. 'Morris, my birthday cake! Why did you do it? Look at my picnic. You've tunnelled right through it! You've mashed my meringues, you've smashed my gateau.' 'So sorry, Miss Mousey, must dig, got to go!'. Down and be digging back down the hole. Adventures await an adventurous mole. The world is so wide and the earth is so big. So much to discover and so much to dig. Oops! 'Morris, you menace. You've toppled our shop. If only your shovelling antics would stop. If only you'd find something better to do.' 'So sorry, dear bunnies, must dig, toodle-oo!'
Down and be digging, back to the toil. The song of the spade, the scent of the soil. I spotted some alliteration with the 's' sound at the start of some words, I'm going to go reread that part again. The song of the spade, the scent of the soil. The creatures I'll meet and the places I'll go. 'Oh, Morris. Oh, Morris. Oh Morris Oh, no!' Now I can see alliteration on this page. The author has used the 'm' sound at the start of a few words. Can you count how many words start with 'm' on this page? Oh yes. Down and be digging. Make a new hole. Oh marvellous, miner, magnificent mole. Five 'm' words. Onward and outward and upward I plow, mole on a mission. Up, up and…. ow!
Clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk. What have they done? They've laid down a wall to stop me from reaching the surface at all. Thwarted, obstructed, scuttled and stuck. Is Morris defeated? Is mole out of luck? No, this mole loves the challenge. He knows what to do. Up and be digging, heave and break through. Now shovel and shovel and one final shove, 'Daylight!' cries Morris, 'look out up above!' Crack, swoosh. Woaaaahhh! 'Oh Morris we've told you and told you!' they scold him in turn, 'Why won't you listen? When will you learn? Look where your digging has landed you now?' 'Amazing!' gasps Morris, 'Oh wonder. Oh, wow! The wind in my whiskers, the freedom, the view.' Did you hear the alliteration? 'Digging, be dashed. I've got flying to do!'
Now that we know we can hear alliteration. It's time to use alliteration to make our writing more interesting. Get your pencils and your paper. It's time to make books. My book is called 'Tahlia's terrific book'. What are you going to call yours? Now this book is a little bit different to Morris the Mole. It's not one big story. On each page we'll be writing about the characters in the book, using alliteration. The characters in the book were the frog, the mouse, the bunnies, and the snail. On the first page we're going to write about the frog. Let's give the frog a name. The word frog starts with 'f' so the name needs to start with 'f'. Frank? Felicia? Fiona? I know, I'm going to call my frog Fred. Fred the frog. We need to describe Fred the frog. Fred, the friendly frog? Fred, the ferocious frog? I've got it, Fred the fancy frog. What are you going to call your frog? You write yours while I write mine. Fred the fancy frog. And don't forget to draw your matching picture. And a crown on top because he is fancy.
On the next page we're going to write about the next character, or characters, the bunnies. Now to use alliteration we need to brainstorm some words that begin with 'b'. Can you help me? We just read a book. At night, I like to sleep in a bed. Can you think of a colour that starts with 'b'? Blue. My favourite fruit starts with 'b', yes, bananas. Now that I have some 'b' words, I think I can make an alliteration sentence about the bunnies. I could write 'The bunnies eat bananas in bed'. What's your sentence going to be? Make sure you write yours while I write mine. The bunnies eat bananas in bed. Don't forget to draw the matching picture.
I'd like you to finish your book by writing a page about the snail and the mouse. You might like to write an extra page about your favourite animal. Mine's the shark. So my sentence would be 'The shark went to the shops to buy some shiny shoes.' Thanks for joining me today. Have a great day.
