Today's learning intention is to break words into smaller word parts to help us read.
I'm going to use some important words today. Segment, blend, digraph and compound word. To segment is to break words into word parts. A blend is two letters that each have their own sound, but we read them together like, 'b' and 'l' make the sound 'bl' in the word black. A digraph is two letters that make one sound like 'a' and 'y' . Together we read it as 'a' in the word way. A compound word is two separate words that when joined together, make a new word, like in the word, something. I can break the word into two parts. I can read the word some and thing. Together it makes the new word, something.
I'm going to read a story to you today called Mutt Dog! I'm going to show you how I use a strategy of breaking words into word parts to help me read.

In the city, lived the dog who belonged to no one. He had to be brave, 'woof!' and fast and smart just to survive. He ate whatever he could find and looked for a new place to….
I'm stuck on a word. I'm going to break it into smaller word parts. I can see the blend 'sl' and the other part 'eep'. Together it makes sleep. Back up and reread.
And looked for a new place to sleep every night. 'Go away you mutt!' One evening, he found a halfway house.
I can break this word up into word parts. I can see the smaller word 'in' and the other word 'side'. It's a compound word. Together it makes a new word 'inside'.
Inside there were people who were cold and tired like him. There wasn't enough room or even enough food for a dog. A lady who worked there tried to put him outside, but the scruffy dog wriggled free and hid in a corner. 'What am I going to do with you?' She gave him a biscuit and made him a bed. The next morning he was on his way. 'This is no place for a stray dog. I wish you could….'
I can break this word up. I can see the blend 'st' and the digraph 'ay'. Together it makes 'stay'. Back up and reread.
'I wish you could stay.' The sky was black and his stomach felt empty. He looked for breakfast and a new place to sleep. 'Wait, scruffy dog!' called a voice. It was a lady from the…
This is a compound word. I can see the smaller word 'half' and the other word 'way'. Together it makes 'halfway'. Back up and reread.
It was a lady from the halfway house. 'Would you like to come home with me?' They left the city and the air filled with new smells. 'He seems friendly.' 'Hi', 'Can we keep him?' His new family gave him the first bath he'd ever had. They brushed out his matted knots, gave him food from a big tin can and something delicious to chew.
I can break this word into word parts. I can see the smaller word 'every' and the other word 'one'. It's a compound word. It reads 'everyone'.
Everyone thought up all sorts of names. Bear, Winston, Tyrone, Radiator, Picasso, Fly Sigmund, Heathcliff, Arrow, Splott, Dingo, Dustin, Afro, Dread. But most of the time everyone called him Mutt Dog. 'Who's a lucky little mutt dog?' Mutt dog is brave and fast and smart. He's gentle and loyal. And each night when he goes to sleep, everyone knows where he belongs.

Can you help me practice breaking words into word parts. There were lots of compound words in the story. Let's look at some more.
In the word rainbow what word parts can you see? Did you see rain and bow? Rain that falls from the sky, bow that you can put on a present. Together they make the new word rainbow. Let's look at another word. What word parts can you see in starfish? Did you see star and fish? Together they make the compound word starfish. Lipstick. Can you see a smaller word in lipstick? Did you see lip and stick together? It makes the new word lipstick. Now for our last word. What word parts can you see in the word snowman? Did you see the smaller word part snow and man? Together they make snowman.
Let's play a compound word game. There are two smaller words, cup and cake together make a new compound word. Can you find the compound word that matches? That's right. Cup and cake together make cupcake. Let's try this one. Paint and brush. Make a new word. Can you find it? Paintbrush. Great job! Basket and ball make the new word basketball. Notice there's no space in between the two words, basket and ball, because it's a new compound word, basketball. Sun and flower make a new word. Did you see that? Sunflower! Our last word is butter and fly. Together the two smaller words make the compound word butterfly.
If you want to play a game like this at home, you can think of some compound words that you know, and draw the word parts and match them. And remember, when you are reading and you get stuck on a word, stop and segment, break the word into word parts like 'bl' and 'ack' together make the word black. You could break a compound word into two word parts, 'some' and 'thing', something. Thanks for joining me today. Bye.
