This unit of work provides learning experiences for year 3 students in geography through an investigation of place, space and the environment.

Students initially explore the key concepts via their own local area. They work with maps, photographs, satellite images and a range of geographical data. They investigate people's perception of place and describe environments using geographical language.

Students use these concepts, investigative skills and geographical tools and language to describe and compare two places within Australia.

They extend their understanding by developing their own inquiry where they compare a place in Australia with a place in the Asia–Pacific region.

The suggested duration of the unit is from 11 to 14 hours, with further time allowed if the extension activity is included.

Assessment opportunities

The following are suggested as ways of evaluating this unit of work.

  • Observe student participation and interaction in group work.
  • Observe students' research skills and how they employ them to answer questions.
  • Compare initial descriptions of place with final presentations. Look for development of vocabulary; use of data; maps; accuracy of information presented; and research skills.
  • Provide students with an evaluation sheet asking questions such as:
    • What have you enjoyed about this unit of work?
    • What did you enjoy the least?
    • List at least five things you have learnt that you did not know before starting this unit of work.
    • Is there anything else you would like to learn about places?
