As a federally funded Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership school, Proserpine State School in Queensland set out to improve literacy outcomes for students across years F–7. The school employed a Literacy Coach – who demonstrated lessons and strategies, and ran professional learning sessions for teachers – and developed a new reading policy to encourage students to read more, and to read more widely. Teachers used quality focus texts to develop comprehension strategies, and improved their classroom pedagogy to support differentiated learning.
Data collected through NAPLAN results, along with other testing, attests to the positive impact of this whole-school approach to reading.
