Using visual tools to assist low achievers with mental computation

Abstract

The focus of this strategy was to determine which visual tools (open number lines, ten-frames, story boards and tactile equipment) assisted low achievers with mental computation, and which tools they relied on. Feedback indicated that the use of visual tools enhanced students' understandings of mental computation. The ability to choose visual tools – especially the story board – improved students' confidence when performing individual tasks.
