Language, Learning and Literacy (L3) was an effective research-based literacy strategy from NSW. It complemented the daily literacy program, without withdrawal, and increased opportunities for students with diverse learning needs to achieve typical outcomes. L3 aimed to reduce the number of year 1 students needing intervention programs such as Reading Recovery.
Teachers undertook professional learning to develop literacy learning plans and targeted teaching that reflected individual student learning needs. They learned techniques for planning and delivering instruction to the whole class and to small groups. Trainers supported teachers by giving feedback and reflecting collaboratively, using regular classroom observations.
