Language, Literacy and Learning Two-Way: teaching Aboriginal EAL/D students in the early years

Abstract

This strategy was developed by the WA Department of Education. The aim was to support schools and teachers to improve their teaching of Standard Australian English literacy and numeracy by developing pedagogies that were sensitive to, engaged with and included Aboriginal students' languages and cultures.

The strategy included action research–based professional development modules using the Two-Way methodology, where Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal educators worked together to create a more inclusive learning environment for Aboriginal students. The strategy provided valuable ideas for teaching Aboriginal English as an Additional Language/Dialect students in the early years.
