Using the example of the humble honey bee, this integrated Science and Mathematics unit illustrates the way in which speciation occurs in nature and explains how living things adapt to survive in their environment. In doing so, the unit describes the nature of simple multiplicative number sequences and how simple algebraic modelling can be used to predict future results within a natural system. Developed through collaboration between the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute and the Gene Technology Access Centre, this unit of work is suitable for challenging your students in Years 5 and 6 or for contextualising algebraic thinking for students in Years 7 and 8.
