Learning objects Triathlon: the course

TLF ID L1104

Compile a news article reporting results of a major triathlon. Look closely at graphs of a triathlete's performance (distance against time and distance against altitude) for the cycling leg of a course. Interpret the graphs to answer questions about the triathlete's peformance and the altitude of the course. Insert your answers into the race report. This learning object is one in a series of four objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students interpret distance-time graphs.
  • Students estimate course slope from distance-height graphs.
Educational value
  • Demonstrates the structure and features of distance-time graphs by comparing performances of triathletes.
  • Illustrates how quantitative data relating to distance, time and speed can be extracted from distance-time graphs.
  • Illustrates and uses a height-distance graph to represent the changes in altitude of a triathlon course
  • Repeat use is encouraged through options to select from a variety of courses and triathletes.
