Learning objects UV Index: simulator

Use a simulator to test the level of ultraviolet (UV) rays. Test the effects of cloud, shade and ground surface: grass, sand, water and snow. Notice that the amount of UV light that reaches a person varies according to the reflectivity of their surroundings. Use simulation results to answer a series of questions. For example, identify conditions where increasing cloud cover may actually increase UV exposure. This learning object is one in a series of two objects.

  • Students rank UV exposure in different environments by comparing cloud cover, shading and reflectivity of ground surface.
  • Students relate numerical values of the UV Index to UV exposure categories.

  • Animations show direct and reflected UV rays to enable their relative importance to be judged.
  • Students prior knowledge is tested through a sequencing activity at the start of each group of scenarios.
