Learning objects The slushy sludger: best guess

Use a vending machine to squirt 'slushies' into ice-cream cones. The machine serves coloured slush randomly from four slots. Work out which colour is the most common (most likely to be served). Notice that the least common colours are sometimes served. Make several guesses, then check your results from the random sample. This learning object is one in a series of three objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students use yes, no or maybe to describe probability situations.
  • Students explore the tension between theoretical probability and randomness.
Educational value
  • Enables students to carry out a data investigation to explore probability concepts based on identifying the most common colour of an item in vending machines.
  • Provides feedback about students selections and the actual results.
  • Encourages repeated use through random generation of samples.
