Learning objects Fair test: growing tomatoes

TLF ID L1184

Run experiments in a plant research laboratory. Investigate the effects of different variables on the growth of tomatoes. Research the answers to questions about how to achieve optimum hydroponic growth conditions. Examine the effect of key variables on growth: nitrogen, temperature, light intensity and light duration. This learning object is one in a series of three objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students set up controlled laboratory experiments to investigate variables affecting plant growth and analyse the resulting data.
  • Students understand the role of controlled experiments and repeated trials in scientific investigation.
Educational value
  • Places students in the role of scientists investigating problems for clients.
  • Introduces the steps needed to conduct a controlled experiment.
  • Allows students to select problems and control variables.
  • Requires analysis of data tables and synthesis of a report based on experimental data.
  • Includes an option for students to print a lab report after compiling it.
