Learning objects Design a park

TLF ID L120

Help a town planner to design a site plan for a park. Assign regions on a grid for different uses such as picnic tables, swings, sandpits or ponds. Use this tool to explore how to express fractions and display them in different ways. Select boxes within the grid and view or enter corresponding fractions and their equivalents. Interact with a dynamic number line to express fractions differently. This learning object is one in a series of two objects combined as 'Park fractions'.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students represent fractions as parts of an array.
  • Students write fractions to match area models.
  • Students identify equivalent fractions.
  • Students represent fractions as numbers on a number line.
Educational value
  • Presents a planning task that focuses the student's attention on the relationship between parts of a whole.
  • Illustrates fractions as part of a whole.
  • Demonstrates equivalent fractions on a number line.
  • Provides an option to print a worksheet that captures the student's design for their park.
