Learning objects Design a neighbourhood

TLF ID L122

Help a town planner to design a site plan for a neighbourhood. Using a 10x20 grid, design areas for four regions (apartments, hospitals, sports fields and schools) based on the fractions, decimals or percentages given. Assign the area required for an additional two regions, using a percentage and a decimal of your choice. Use a number line to indicate the equivalent fractions and decimals for two regions. This learning object is one in a series of three objects combined as 'Neighbourhood fractions'.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students represent fractions as parts of an array.
  • Students apply understanding of equivalent fractions.
  • Students convert from one type of written fraction to another, using percentages, common fractions and decimal fractions.
  • Students calculate percentages to describe a fraction of an area.
Educational value
  • Includes planning tasks that focus the student's attention on the relationships between fractions, percentages and decimal fractions.
  • Illustrates fractions, percentages and decimal fractions as part of a whole.
  • Illustrates that percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100.
  • Demonstrates how percentages and decimal fractions can be expressed as fractions on a number line.
  • Provides an option to print a worksheet that captures the student's design for their site plan.
