Design a city

TLF ID L123

Help a town planner to design a site plan for a city. Using a 10x20 grid, design areas for two regions (schools and terraces) based on the percentages given. Assign the area for an additional six regions, using percentages of your choice. Observe the number line displaying equivalent fractions and decimals for the percentages used. This learning object is one in a series of three objects combined as 'Neighbourhood fractions'.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
• Students represent fractions as parts of an array.
• Students apply understanding of equivalent fractions.
• Students calculate percentages to describe a fraction of an area.
Educational value
• Presents a mapping task that focuses the student's attention on the relationships between fractions, decimal fractions and percentages.
• Illustrates that percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100.
• Demonstrates how percentages can be expressed as fractions and decimal fractions on a number line.
• Provides an option to print a worksheet that captures the student's design for the city plan.
