# Design your own school

TLF ID L128

Help a town planner to design a site plan for a school. Using a 10x10 grid, design areas for two regions (playgrounds and classrooms) based on the percentages given. Assign the area for an additional six regions, using percentages of your choice. Observe the number line displaying equivalent fractions for the percentages used. This learning object is one in a series of two objects. The series is also packaged as a combined learning object.

#### Educational details

Key learning objectives
• Students represent fractions as parts of an array.
• Students apply understanding of equivalent fractions.
• Students calculate percentages to describe fractions of an area.
Educational value
• Presents a mapping task that focuses the student's attention on the relationship between fractions and percentages.
• Illustrates that percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100.
• Demonstrates how percentages can be expressed as fractions on a number line.
• Provides an option to print a worksheet that captures the student's design for the site plan.
