# Cassowary fractions

TLF ID L155

Help a park ranger to arrange fencing in a wildlife sanctuary. Divide common geometric shapes into equal-sized sections for keeping cassowaries. Group the enclosures to form a quarantine zone for sick or injured birds. Then express the divisions of the enclosures as fractions. This learning object is one in a series of two objects.

#### Educational details

Key learning objectives
• Students represent fractions as parts of shapes.
• Students model equivalent fractions.
Educational value
• Models equivalent fractions by dividing common geometric shapes into equal-sized sections.
• Provides opportunities to partition a range of simple shapes, including regular polygons.
• Provides opportunities to add and divide fractions.
• Encourages repeated use through random generation of scenarios involving equivalent fractions.
• Includes an option to print a report showing how the student divided shapes, according to given fractions.
