Learning objects Squirt: three containers

TLF ID L1990

Examine the relationships between capacities of various containers. Look at three containers that may have different diameters, heights and shapes. Fill a container and squirt liquids between the containers to establish the proportional relationship. Work out the third 'unlinked' relationship from two known relationships. Express relationships using mathematical notation such as 2a=6b=3c. This learning object is a combination of two objects in a series of five objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students use proportions to represent quantitative relationships.
  • Students use the transitive property of equality to find the relationship between three variables.
  • Students express proportional relationships using mathematical notation.
Educational value
  • Encourages the use of the transitive property to establish relative proportions.
  • Students use symbols to express proportional relationships.
  • Randomised generation of containers with a range of volumes and relationships supports repeated use.
