# Scale matters: negatives

TLF ID L2001

Explore the use of scale on a number line. Select a ruler displaying a helpful scale such as ones. Look at a pair of numbers such as -5 and -2 marked on a number line. Identify the number corresponding to another point. Or locate another point on the number line to complete a series of three numbers. Apply a marked scale to help estimate the relative distances. This learning object is one in a series of seven objects. Some objects in the series are also packaged as a combined learning object.

#### Educational details

Key learning objectives
• Students locate numbers on a given scale.
• Students use a scale to measure discrete quantities.
• Students locate numbers (including negative numbers) accurately on a continuous scale.
• Students identify how variations in unit size relate proportionally to the number of units that will fit into a given space.
Educational value
• Uses scales to relate numbers to each other on number lines.
• Provides a range of scales to help students relate variations in unit size to the number of units that will fit into a given space.
• Helps students to apply efficient multiplicative or additive strategies.
• Random generation of points and numbers supports repeated use.
