Learning objects Pobble arrays: find a factor

TLF ID L2057

Help creatures to line up and walk through gates in equal rows and columns. Look at the given numbers of pobbles and gates, and enter the number of rows. For example, predict how many equal rows of pobbles are needed to fit 12 of them through four gates. Check your prediction. This learning object is one in a series of three objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students explore multiplicative relationships through the structure of arrays.
  • Students find sets of factors for a number.
  • Students recognise the commutative property of multiplication.
Educational value
  • Relates the formation of equal groups to an array structure of equal rows and equal columns.
  • Introduces the commutative property of multiplication.
  • Automated array construction provides a visual model to support understanding of the multiplicative relationship between factors.
