Learning objects Measures: similar shapes

TLF ID L2309

Compare the sizes and angles of a range of triangles, squares and rectangles. Notice that 'similar shapes' in the mathematical sense have the same shape and possibly different sizes. Corresponding sides are in proportion, and corresponding angles are equal. Identify shapes that are similar and create shapes similar to given shapes. This learning object is the first in a series of eight objects that progressively increase in difficulty.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students manipulate shapes to distinguish between similar and non-similar plane shapes.
  • Students identify corresponding sides and angles of plane shapes.
  • Students apply mathematical language and criteria to identify and create similar shapes.
Educational value
  • Illustrates the meaning of corresponding angles, corresponding sides, proportions and similar shapes.
  • Enables students to manipulate shapes to distinguish between similar and non-similar plane shapes.
  • Provides criteria needed to identify and create similar shapes.
  • Provides opportunities to use multiplication facts in ratio and scale situations.
  • Includes scalable shapes with lengths and angles displayed to two decimal places.
  • Displays point scores after ten attempts at identifying similar shapes.
