Learning objects Mystery substances: your first case

TLF ID L2361

Solve police cases by identifying pure substances and components of mixtures. Carry out chemical tests on a mystery substance such as salt, baking soda or sugar. Observe and record how a substance reacts with a range of liquids and to heating. Refer to a data table of chemical properties and use it to match a mystery substance or substances found at a crime scene. This learning object is one in a series of five objects. Some of the objects in the series are also packaged in two combined learning objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students carry out chemical tests on common substances.
  • Students observe and record changes that occur when common substances are heated or added to a range of liquid reagents.
  • Students use data tables to record and retrieve information.
  • Students use chemical tests to identify unknown substances.
Educational value
  • Introduces chemical analysis of pure substances and mixtures.
  • Demonstrates simple experimental procedures for testing reactions with liquids and heat.
  • Simulates reactions of common substances with iodine, water, vinegar and the action of heat.
  • Provides data tables for recording results.
  • Challenges students to extract information from a data table.
