Learning objects Media report 1

TLF ID L2393

Help an editor to check an article drafted for a magazine. Examine a column graph showing findings about eating habits, music access or petrol prices. Make sure the graph is soundly constructed. Look for any problems that may affect the accuracy of conclusions drawn from the graph. For example, check that markings on the vertical axis are evenly spaced and start at zero. Adjust the graph if needed. This learning object is a combination of three objects in a series of six learning objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students interpret graphical representations of grouped data.
  • Students identify errors in construction of scales and misleading conclusions derived from that data.
  • Students edit a graph to conform with sound graphing practices.
Educational value
  • Presents grouped data and interpretations of graphs for students to verify and adjust as needed.
  • Provides soundness criteria for students to validate data representation methods.
  • Includes summary statements for students to restate conclusions consistent with data presented.
