Learning objects Media report: cost of petrol

TLF ID L2627

Help an editor to check an article drafted for a magazine. Examine a column graph showing petrol prices over time. Make sure the graph is soundly constructed. Look for any problems that may affect the accuracy of conclusions drawn from the graph. For example, check that the form of the columns is suitable. Adjust the graph if needed. This learning object is one in a series of six objects. Three objects in the series are also packaged as a combined learning object.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students interpret graphical representations of grouped data.
  • Students identify errors in representing data and misleading conclusions derived from that data.
  • Students edit a graph to conform with sound graphing practices.
Educational value
  • Presents grouped data and interpretations of graphs for students to verify and adjust as needed.
  • Provides soundness criteria for students to validate data representation methods.
  • Includes summary statements for students to restate conclusions consistent with data presented.
