Explore a beach and create a design using objects found in rock pools, sand dunes, the tidal zone and a rubbish bin. Plan a design to communicate a message. Choose objects and materials. Use tools to arrange elements of your design such as size, position and tone. Arrange the materials to create new meanings. Look at aspects such as composition, contrast, juxtaposition, perspective and repetition. Review and revise your work. Describe how you could use your design to work with real objects. This learning object is one in a series of four objects.

  • Students investigate techniques and methods used to create new meanings in an artistic work.
  • Students bring new meaning to objects by using or positioning them within a new context of understanding and regime of signs.
  • Students use a range of materials to construct an artwork to communicate a specific meaning.
  • Students evaluate and reflect on their own creative process and evolution of ideas.
Educational value
  • Helps students to manipulate visual properties of found objects and arrange them into new compositions to reflect a theme.
  • Introduces key concepts related to transformation: juxtaposition, composition, perspective, repetition and contrast.
  • Provides a selection of tools (scale, tone, move, rotate) and materials for students to manipulate objects.
  • Provides an interactive workbook and screen captures for students to evaluate and reflect on their own creative process and design.
  • Prompts students to describe their reasons for choice of theme, selection of objects, use of tools, awareness of site, audience and potential durability of their design.
  • Includes an option for students to print their completed image, design review and reflections on the creative process.
