Learning objects Seasons: the hemispheres

TLF ID L5777

Control the motion of the Earth in its orbit around the Sun. Work out how the Earth’s orbit and the tilt of its axis determine day length in the different hemispheres. For example, work out the equinoxes. This learning object is part of a series of four objects. The series is also packaged as a combined learning object.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students describe the Earth's rotation on a tilted axis and its revolution around the Sun.
  • Students relate latitude to day length.
  • Students relate the changing elevation of the Sun in the sky to day length.
Educational value
  • Illustrates and explains the Earth’s orbit.
  • Allows students to manipulate an interactive model of the Earth in its orbit to investigate equinoxes and solstices.
  • Helps student understanding by showing simultaneous views of the Earth from different viewpoints.
  • Tests understanding by asking students to position the Earth in its orbit to correspond to important annual astronomical events.
  • Tests student understanding and interpretation through multiple-choice questions.
  • Provides structured feedback to student input.
