Learning objects Types of matter: compounds and mixtures

TLF ID L5824

Select samples from an outdoor setting. Magnify the substances to atomic level so that the particles they consist of can be seen. Sort the substances into groups based on how many types of molecules they contain. Classify the substances as pure compounds or mixtures. For example, classify water as a pure compound and coffee as a mixture. This learning object is the fifth in a series of six objects that progressively increase in difficulty.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students interpret atomic-level views of substances.
  • Students classify substances as pure compounds or mixtures based on the number of types of molecules they contain.
Educational value
  • Shows atomic-level views of substances.
  • Requires students to classify substances as pure compounds or mixtures based on the number of types of molecules they contain.
  • Explains that mixtures contain more than one type of molecule, whereas compounds contain one type of molecule made up of more than one type of atom.
  • Provides feedback to user input.
  • Includes an option to print a fact sheet summarising the difference between pure compounds and mixtures.
