Learning objects Create a creature

TLF ID L755

Have a close look at body parts of small creatures such as a wolf spider, a beetle or a bull ant. Explore descriptions of each body part and its uses. For example, examine a scorpion's long tail to see how it is adapted to stinging prey. Build your own creature. Choose body parts to suit your animal's feeding behaviour, type of movement and habitat. Match body parts for a range of invertebrates. Identify each animal and select which habitat it is best suited to. This learning object is a combination of three objects in the same series.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students explore the basic features of animals by designing small invertebrates using different body parts.
  • Students analyse the needs of a small invertebrate and relate them to body structure and function.
Educational value
  • Enables students to design an invertebrate by selecting and joining together parts such as head, body, wings, legs, tail, pincers and antennae.
  • Provides information about the function of each invertebrate body part.
  • Enables students to write a description of the invertebrate they have designed.
  • Allows students to print out the image and description of the invertebrate they have designed.
  • Challenges the student to build a target invertebrate by moving the correct body parts to the right place on an outline.
  • Identifies the target invertebrate once it is complete.
  • Asks students to read about an invertebrate they have built and place it in a suitable habitat.
