Learning objects Finding symmetry: one line: garden

TLF ID L7800

Explore a secret garden to find shapes with one line of symmetry. Look for shapes that are hidden in objects, for example a bush, crocodile and fountain. Use the testing wand to fold the shapes into matching halves. Check your prediction. Find and test more hidden shapes. This learning object is one in a series of six objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students distinguish between symmetrical and non-symmetrical 2D shapes.
  • Students test a shape for reflectional symmetry by folding it into a matching half.
  • Students analyse shapes with one axis of symmetry.
Educational value
  • Demonstrates that a variety of 2D shapes have one line of symmetry.
  • Provides opportunities for students to test axes of symmetry using a shape-folding tool.
  • Allows students to explore 2D shapes to develop an understanding of symmetry by folding them into matching halves.
