Learning objects Viewfinder: up front [ESL]

TLF ID L9995

Explore visual perspectives of solids such as cylinders, cones and cuboids. Match a 2D photo of a group of 3D objects taken from a different viewpoint. Identify the relative positions of the solids by comparing 2D outlines and colours. Rearrange the objects on a base grid until the view matches the original photo. View both the original photo and the base grid front-on in the same horizontal plane. This learning object is one in a series of four objects.

Educational details

Key learning objectives
  • Students interpret and visualise 2D representations of 3D objects.
  • Students place objects to make 3D models from plans and projections.
  • Students translate between 2D representations and 3D objects.
Educational value
  • Illustrates that the perceived shape of objects depends on the observer’s viewing point.
  • Displays a group of objects from different perspectives.
  • Provides visual cues about the shape of objects to construct a three-dimensional scene.
  • Enables the student to select from four levels of difficulty.
  • Features modified language for English as a Second Language users.
  • Includes a glossary of terms used in the activity.
