TLF ID M006712

This is a powerful collection of online materials that focus on drawings and paintings by the 'hibakusha', the survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945. The materials consist of an illustrated essay by Professor John Dower and a Visual Narrative of eight images, drawn and annotated by survivor Tomiko Konishi. Teachers are advised to preview this collection as the sensitive and disturbing nature of the images requires that they be used with respect and care.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a pivotal collection of primary and secondary sources for any historical study that includes understanding the consequences of the atomic bombs for the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As such, it is highly significant for years 11 and 12 Modern History and for year 10 History, especially for the Second World War depth study that calls for an examination of significant events of the war, including the use of the atomic bomb.
  • The Visual Narrative presents Tomiko Konishi's testimony of the events she experienced as a young girl on 6 August in Hiroshima. When aged 58, she prepared the eight drawings that make up the Visual Narrative, annotating them extensively in Japanese kanji and hiragana. The annotations have been translated into English.
  • The illustrated essay by John Dower contains paintings and drawings by many survivors. Dower draws out their common themes and provides a comprehensive and heart-rending explanation of the images that serves to heighten their power and effect. The essay is also available as a separate resource.
