Teacher guide First Australians: telling our Indigenous stories

In this unit of work students are asked to consider how the National Museum of Australia’s First Australians gallery presents Indigenous cultures and history. The unit includes a number of activities that help students explore the stories and experiences of Australia’s Indigenous peoples.

Educational value
  • The unit of work draws on museum objects, documents and historical information to explore some of the diverse lifestyles of Indigenous Australians over 40,000 years. Source images are reproduced at A4 size to facilitate classroom discussion.
  • Students investigate a number of important themes and events in the exhibition including: the origins of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life in Australia; traditional land ownership and land rights; trading materials and routes; diversity, spirituality and technology; early contact and conflict with European settlers; the mission experience; and land rights.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have continuing affiliations to 'country' that refer to land, water and sky. In 1788 the First Fleet landed and Governor Arthur Phillip declared that the British Crown had sovereignty over Australians lands, and the resulting contact between Indigenous Australians and British colonists often had severe consequences for Indigenous peoples.
