  • As Australia's twelfth prime minister, Menzies was in office for two years from 1939, and then returned from 1949 to 1966. He is Australia's longest-serving prime minister, serving a combined total of 18 years. During his tenure as prime minister Robert Menzies presided over the commencement of the Second World War and later the Korean War. He was also responsible for the continuing development of Canberra as the national capital, specifically assigning funding for the creation of Lake Burley Griffin.
