Teacher guide Active citizenship: problems and possible solutions - unit of work

TLF ID M009436

This is a short unit of three lessons about two problems and how they might be solved. The problems are unsafe situations at the end of the school day and places near the school that are unsafe or uncared for. Suggested student activities include using an online interactive resource and an inside/outside circle, developing role-plays and compiling a problems/solutions chart and a SWOT analysis. Templates for the problems/solutions chart, SWOT analysis and an action plan are provided. The lessons of two hours each are intended for the middle primary years.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the civics and citizenship curriculum area. Personal and shared responsibility is an important part of the curriculum in the middle primary years. Using familiar school and local contexts, the unit helps students define their shared right to safety and exercise their responsibilities in various scenarios.  It also provides a focus for students to make decisions in groups to achieve common goals and participate in local environmental action.
  • The unit's suggested activities are appropriate for the intended learners. The digital curriculum resource, suitable for use on an interactive whiteboard, enables students to evaluate social behaviours in a setting outside a school, identify responsible actions and rank community rules in a charter. The SWOT analysis allows students to develop skills in evaluating proposed actions in terms of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
