This is a short unit of work of two extended lessons about representation in Australian federal and state/territory parliaments. The unit aims to ensure that students realise there are similarities and differences in representation at each level and between the states and territories. The pedagogical approach is inquiry-based and includes student activities such as small group research and class jigsaws. The lessons are intended for the middle and upper primary years and the unit includes five student worksheets.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the civics and citizenship curriculum area. Australia is a representative democracy and understanding the concept of democratic representation and how it works in Australian parliaments are important parts of the curriculum in middle and upper primary years. The unit covers representation in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and in the parliaments of every Australian state and territory.
  • The unit's suggested activities are comprehensive and appropriate for the intended learners and could be extended into a longer sequence. The unit's overall focus question 'How many times am I represented?' is potentially engaging and there are 18 suggested prompt questions to guide student inquiry. Students are assisted by tools such as SWOT and PMI and present their findings in histograms, pie charts and pamphlets.
