Teacher guide What are my values? - unit of work

TLF ID M009445

This is a unit consisting of two extended lessons about those values that young people feel strongly about and how they can and have been translated into action. The teaching and learning strategies centre on values identification, firstly by reading biographies of three Australians and secondly by students examining their own values and considering how they can put them into practice. The unit is underpinned by 'Nine values for Australian schooling' and is intended for upper primary and lower secondary students.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the civics and citizenship curriculum area. By the end of year 7, students are generally expected to be able to identify values that support social cohesion and consider the ways in which this can be undermined or strengthened by individual and collective action. The idea of individuals taking values-based action is supported throughout the unit, particularly in the biographies of Hugh Evans, Jesse Martin and Louise Sauvage.
  • The teaching and learning strategies described in the unit are appropriate for the intended learners. The action plan template provided in the unit is useful and there are suggestions for what teachers can do if the students are not familiar with the 'Nine values for Australian schooling' and what they represent, or are unaware of how to identify explicitly stated and/or implied values in a biography.
