This is an extended unit of work for the lower secondary years about the main types of government, how government functioned in Athens and Sparta in ancient Greece, and how the rule of the people functions in Australia. The unit contains four focus questions that are explored through sequences of learning with student activities and assessment tasks. Teacher notes, assessment criteria and student handouts are included in the resource.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the elective depth study of ancient Greece in year 7 history. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions about the physical features of Greece, the roles of key groups in Athenian and Spartan society, and the significant beliefs, values and practices of the ancient Greeks.
  • The learning activities in the unit provide useful opportunities for year 7 students to develop and enhance their historical skills. These skills include locating, selecting and using information from a range of sources as evidence, drawing conclusions about the usefulness of sources, and developing historical texts, particularly descriptions and explanations that use evidence from a range of sources, both primary and secondary sources.
  • The unit is also useful for civics and citizenship. By this stage of schooling, students should be able to describe the general processes involved in preferential voting, identify how governments make decisions, and explore ways that these decisions can be influenced. The unit provides numerous opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate these abilities, especially in the learning sequences and activities associated with the fourth focus question.
