Teacher guide Multicultural stories - unit of work

TLF ID M009603

This is a unit of work about immigration to Australia. Intended for middle secondary students, the unit is organised around historical research into three areas: the reason/s that people left their homelands, the contributions migrants have made and possible motivations for their contributions, and the history of Australia's immigration and multicultural policies. The unit makes use of interactive digital resources, and the storyboard approach used in the digital resources is recommended as a model for students to use in presenting their research findings.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the elective depth study 'Migration experiences (1945-present)' in year 10 history. The unit's three-part approach makes it particularly relevant to content descriptions in the depth study about the effects of a world event such as the Vietnam War, the consequences of changing government policies for migration and multiculturalism, and the contribution of migration to Australia's changing identity.
  • The unit's research-based approach is very useful in developing and enhancing year 10 students' historical skills. Students are given opportunities to synthesise information from a range of sources to use as evidence in a historical argument, to consider the perspectives and motivations of people from the recent past, and to present their findings using storyboards and exhibitions.
