Teacher guide Australians as global citizens - unit of work

TLF ID M009607

This is a unit of work about global citizenship and Australia. Intended for upper primary and lower secondary students, the unit is organised around three main topics: the values and attitudes of a good global citizen, the work of an aid organisation, and the help that Australia gives to countries and communities in its region. Oxfam's and Australia's aid to the Solomon Islands are used as case studies in the unit. A brief study of human rights is also included to help students assess their own values and attitudes as global citizens.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for civics and citizenship. The ways in which Australians are connected to other people around the world and the responsibilities of global citizenship are important themes in the curriculum.
  • It is a reasonable expectation that year 7 students are able to analyse how individuals, organisations and governments can be global citizens. The unit provides many opportunities to develop this capacity.
