This is an extended unit of work about the unique rights of Indigenous peoples within Australia's democracy. Intended for middle secondary students, the unit is organised around five areas of investigation: perspectives on land; an Aboriginal creation story and Aboriginal place names; the issue of climbing Uluru; different perspectives on the climbing issue; and the background to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for civics and citizenship. By the middle secondary years, students should have developed a conceptual understanding of the human rights that belong to all human beings. This unit takes that understanding further by investigating the concept of the unique rights of Indigenous peoples. Using the Uluru case study, students explore the different perspectives of people who believe that their needs and wants intersect with Indigenous rights.
  • The unit offers an interesting way of approaching the year 10 history case study 'Rights and freedoms (1945-the present)'. It is particularly relevant to the content description about the continuing nature of efforts to secure civil rights, such as the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007). The unit's fifth investigation focuses on this declaration. Although the unit was written when the declaration was still in draft form, the activity remains relevant and useful.
