Teacher guide Background to Federation - unit of work

TLF ID M009616

This is a unit of work about the nature of Australian identity at the time of Federation in 1901 and how Federation contributed to the development of that identity. Intended for middle secondary students, the unit is organised around a historical investigation into national identity and its development, using five aspects of the historical inquiry process to help students reach some conclusions. The inquiry aspects are: gathering information; analysis and interpretation; using information; challenging your research; and reporting and presenting.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for year 9 history, in particular for the elective depth study 'Making a nation'. The unit's focus on national identity and its range of teaching-learning strategies offer a motivational teaching and learning approach to the depth study's content descriptions about the experiences of non-Europeans in Australia before the 1900s, and the key events and ideas in the development of Australian self-government and democracy.
  • The unit's inquiry-based approach is very useful in developing and enhancing year 9 students' historical skills. Students are given opportunities to synthesise information from a range of sources to use as evidence in a historical argument, consider the perspectives of people from the past and reconsider their own interpretations.
