Learning objects Languages online: Tetris game maker

TLF ID M009714

This resource is a tool students can use to make their own Tetris computer game in which a player must correctly respond to a clue that appears after every fourth falling block. Clues can be text, pictures or audio. If the answer is correct, the game continues. If it is incorrect, a 'bomb' falls through the game space, removing any blocks in its way. Included are five files for students and teachers to download, an eight-part information screen, and 16 examples of Tetris games already created for Japanese, Mandarin, Indonesian, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, French, German and English.

Educational value
  • This resource is a useful tool for students, enabling them to make their own version of a world-famous game while requiring them to identify worthwhile clues and unambiguous answers to include in it. Examples of possible clues include names for parts of the body, numbers in a language other than English, geographical landforms and spellings of spoken words.
  • This tool helps to develop students' critical and creative thinking during planning and creation stages.
  • Tetris games can be motivational for student players. Answering the clues correctly reinforces learning in an incidental way that allows the game to continue, rows to be completed and the player's score to increase.
  • Supporting information is provided on topics such as planning and creating a good game (and saving and playing it) and technical issues. An assessment rubric for teachers is included, along with clip art and a guide to the codes used to add accented characters to the game.
