This resource is about Roman religion. It consists of nine images that link to text about the different practices and beliefs that existed in ancient Rome. It includes information on the state-recognised worship of traditional gods and about some of the diverse religions that were tolerated in ancient Rome as long as they did not threaten public order or Roman control.

Educational value
  • The resource is useful for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in Year 7 relating to the influence of religion in ancient Roman society. It provides images and information about the diverse religions that coexisted under a policy of religious tolerance and acceptance. Romans were prepared to accept other gods if they had a similarity to one of their own gods, as in the example of the Roman Jupiter and the Greek Zeus.
  • The resource is useful for the development of historical skills associated with sequencing and chronology. Students use the resource to develop an annotated timeline of the diverse religions in ancient Rome, up to 392 AD, when Christianity effectively became the state religion under Emperor Theodosius I.
  • This resource is useful for the development of historical skills associated with developing historical questions. Students identify and select different types of questions about the past to inform a historical inquiry about the role and influence of religion in ancient Rome.
  • The resource may also make a contribution to students attaining the history achievement standards in year 7 in relation to the role of groups in society, and has some relevance to the literacy capability and the critical and creative capability.
