  • This resource is useful for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 8 relating to the roles and relationships of different groups in the Ottoman Empire. It outlines the 'millet' system of the Ottoman Empire whereby non-Muslim communities, including religious, ethnic and geographical communities, were granted a limited amount of power to regulate their own affairs under the Ottoman administration.
  • This resource is useful for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 8 in relation to the Empire's policy of religious tolerance. It outlines the millet system that regarded non-Muslim people, including Christians and Jews, as subjects but did not require them to be subject to Muslim laws. Sultan Mehmet II encouraged Jewish traders from Europe to set up business in Constantinople and believed that Muslims should pay respect to all religions.
