Educational value
  • This resource is useful for the study of the plague in England in 1348. It addresses the Australian Curriculum: History content descriptions in year 8 referring to the effects of the plague on population and the short- and long-term effects on communities. It indicates that the high morbidity levels resulted in a sharp decline in the number of younger people in villages and in a low number of births, which in some villages took decades to reverse.
  • The resource is useful for reporting the short-term effects of the plague on villages in rural England. The information provided from manorial rolls reveals that in some villages the plague was so severe that the entire village population died. Other villages lost so many of the working population they were unable to continue with agricultural work such as planting and reaping the crops.
  • This resource is useful for the development of history skills relating to historical sources. It can be used for a classroom discussion on the type of resources historians use for the Middle Ages when literacy levels were low. It reveals the information that can be obtained from records such as manorial rolls to uncover the effects of the plague in rural England.
